OUR BELIEFS

About God

God is the loving Creator of all things, both seen and unseen. God is eternal and completely good, knowing all things and holding all power and majesty. God exists as the Trinity.  He is three persons, yet one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God desperately desires a relationship with us and towards this end continually invites us into a relationship of faith, friendship, learning, and service.

Genesis 1:1; John 14:6-9, 15-17 and John 16:7-15; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 John 4:9-10

About The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit, sent from God to live inside all who believe in Jesus Christ, teaches, comforts, and empowers us, giving each follower diverse gifts, fostering unity, interdependence, productivity, Christ-like character, and love among Christians. The empowering of the Holy Spirit, the promise of the Father, is available for every Christian.

Acts 1:8; 2:4; Romans 5:5 and Romans 8; 1 Corinthians 12-14; Galatians 5:16-25; Ephesians 3:16, Ephesians 4:3-4, and Ephesians 5:18; John 14:26 and John 16:7-14

About Jesus Christ

God expressed himself in human form through Jesus Christ, the Son of God, born of the virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life, was crucified for the sins of us all, was buried, rose again from the dead, and ascended to heaven.

Colossians 1:13-23 and Colossians 2:8-14; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Matthew 22:36-40 ; John 14:1-3; Hebrews 1:1-3; Acts 10:42-43; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

About The Bible

We believe that God speaks to us in the Bible, His inerrant word.  It is our privilege to seek to understand God's message and apply it responsibly to our lives. The Bible is our standard in all we say and do. We believe that God's unchangeable Biblical message ought to be presented in a relevant way portraying a real hope, to a real people through a real God.  It’s our desire that this message is free of religious jargon and understandable to the people of our community.

Matthew 5:17-19; 2 Timothy 2:15 and 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Hebrew 4:12; 2 Peter 1:16-21 and 2 Peter 3:14-18; Psalm 19:7-11 and Psalm 119:9-16; Joshua 1:7-8; Acts 17:11

Born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, I am the product of a small town.  Growing up, we were excited to be the hometown of John Mellencamp, the world famous musician who wrote "Small Town."

Growing up I attended several churches including Methodist, Baptist, Assembly of God and Non-Denominational......and the cool thing is that each one made a true impact on my life. That being the case, I believe in the Church corporately and what God can and will do through it if we dwell together in unity! Not long after recognizing the call to ministry, I attended Christ For The Nations in Dallas, Texas where I traveled the country as a part of ‘Living Praise’ a worship band that represented the school.

Since 2005 I have been found at Horizons Christian Assembly as Lead Pastor because this is where God called me to be.  And He's been doing great things ever since!

OUR VALUES

Community

"The best relationships are the ones in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other."

Jesus had so much to say about relationships and community and they were central to everything He did.  We find so much in the Bible about relational community.  Jesus spoke about it in the Gospels and many of the other biblical writers spoke to the topic as well.  From loving one another, to unity, to praying for one another, to encouraging one another in the faith, to keeping no records of wrong, the Bible goes on and on about things that affect our relationships and thus our community.  That being the case, we are striving to help build healthy community at Horizons that people can thrive in.

Community and relationships, be it with people at Horizons or with other churches in our community and abroad are of utmost importance to us.  That being said, our prayer is that everyone will find healthy community and relationships here at Horizons!

"By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.  John 13:35

Multiplication

"Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ."

Call it discipleship, replication, growth or multiplication.....the truth is that we need to be reproducing ourselves.  At Horizons we take Jesus' command to "Go make disciples...", very seriously!  Jesus taught and modeled multiplication for us and we believe it is vital to the health of the church.  At Horizons we strive to see people discipled,  to see leaders replicating themselves, to see churches planted, to see things changing and growing in healthy ways.  The making of disciples is paramount to the Church.  Jesus said do it.......and we are doing our best to fulfill it!

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. " Matthew 28:19-20

Prayer

"Prayer should be your steering wheel, not your spare tire!"

Prayer has always been a cornerstone discipline of the Christian faith and it has changed the course of human history!  Today, society tends to be too busy for prayer, but we are doing our best to rebuild this discipline and put it back in its rightful place within the church.  Prayer changes lives...it changes churches...it changes countries...it's changed us!

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."      Philippians 4:6-7

Relevance

“The Church should be culturally relevant while remaining doctrinally pure."

Churches have struggled with remaining relevant in our ever changing world, so we work hard to remain relevant in all we do.  Culture is a diverse thing...it's ever changing...therefore our methods must continually change while our message remains constant.  The Bible is the best selling book of all time and there is a reason for that... because it's relevant to every culture.  It always has been and always will be.  We don't shy away from the tough stuff or from the hard topics in today's world. At Horizons, we strive to show people that God, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are relevant for today!

I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.  John 10:10

Excellence

“If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well.”

We serve a God of excellence, therefore we do the best we can to serve and live in this capacity.  Some shy away from excellence because they fear that what they bring, won't be good enough.  But here at Horizons, we understand excellence to be more of a heart posture than an end result.  It's not about your ability to do something as much as it is your heart behind doing it.  Bring your best...bring the very best you have...bring your "A" game...because that is what God does for us.  Let's show the world that the church and the God we serve is excellent!

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people.  Colossians 3:23

Involvement

“All Christians, not just leaders, are called to be servants…”

God created each of us with a purpose......a unique purpose......a purpose that when discovered can and will allow us to impact things around us.  There is nothing more beautiful than a person discovering their true identity and purpose in Christ and living that out as they serve others!  If people are going to be like Jesus, then they have to get up from their seats and serve!  And sometimes you find that as you do, you are blessed more than those you serve!  Get involved!

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life…"  Mark 10:45

The General Council of the Assemblies of God (USA), one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in the United States, was organized in 1914 by a broad coalition of ministers who desired to work together to fulfill common objectives, such as sending missionaries and providing fellowship and accountability. Formed in the midst of the emerging worldwide Pentecostal revival, the Assemblies of God quickly took root in other countries and formed indigenous national organizations. The Assemblies of God (USA) is a constituent member of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship – one of the largest Pentecostal fellowships in the world.
